A Message from the President
The mission of Women to the World is to help disenfranchised women and children improve their lives, taking their rightful places as contributing members of their families, communities, and nations. We believe that women need education to provide for the needs of their families. Measurable solutions include language certification, job-skill training, and community health education. Women to the World must address the sensitive issues of gender prejudices in the workplace in many cultures around the world.
Women and children are impacted the most by the wars, terrorism, disease, poverty, and even natural disasters. They are the ones who are most vulnerable. Yet most of the time they possess the least resources to cope with these traumatic life situations or even survive them. This harsh reality is the reason for our existence. The hope that drives us to action is practical and strong. We know that it is possible to equip women so abused by giving them life skills that can never be taken away again.
It has been our privilege for more than 20 years to come alongside women in Turkey, Peru, Ukraine, Pakistan, Burkina Faso, Tajikistan, India, and Afghanistan to identify and address some of their most critical needs. During most of those years our experienced specialists provided practical, short-term training in such areas as project design, family health, business development, and education.
More than five years ago we embarked on a long-term education and medical project in service to the women and girls of Afghanistan. The intense need of women and girls who had been so suppressed by the Taliban demanded our best in response to their cry. Because of the long and unique experiences of several of our members who had worked in that country , our help has been enthusiastically received, and they are asking for more training as this is written to you.
The Women to the World Afghanistan project which we call "Women's Initiative for Life and Learning" involves a Women's Center in a suburb of Kabul where we offer concentrated courses and adult education in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) and Academic Courses in English (ACE) as well as practical skills training and health education. A computer lab has been installed and women are asking for more courses that will prepare them for employment in government or aid offices. Many of these women are single mothers simply desiring to provide food, clothing, and education for their children.
Also, watch for upcoming information on projects ranging from a computer education program for women and girls in Burkina Faso, to first-aid and disaster response training for first responders in Turkey. Practical, humanitarian aid is continuing to lift the burden of refugees in Tajikistan, and a sewing project in India continues.
The need for your help today is greater than ever. We need qualified teachers willing to provide instruction in Afghanistan, in the fields of EFL, computer skills, basic office skills, general health, and gender sensitivity studies. We need help in funding all the work before us so that excellence can be our motto. Thank you for picking up the phone or e-mailing us in order to contribute your gifts for those crying out for help.
2008 is a year of unprecedented opportunity and blessing for women and children around the world. Please help us meet these opportunities with dignity and excellence.
Serving With You,
Doris Aldrich
